Many industrial applications have many fire detection challenges including dust, dirt, water, corrosive chemicals, extreme low temperatures, high electromagnetic interference or vibration, or hazardous locations.

Aspirating Smoke Detection combines proven robust technology with the ability to condition the air stream before it enters the detection chamber to provide reliable detection technology for even the harshest of environments.

Dusty and Dirty Environments

All VESDA detectors employ a variety of different technologies to protect their optics from contamination. However, VESDA VLI detectors are the only aspirating smoke detectors that have a fully-monitored intelligent filter and IP66 rating. These features make VESDA VLI detectors the most rigorous and reliable detectors for dusty and dirty applications.

Waterproof Detection

VESDA VLI detectors are designed with an IP66 rated enclosure to prevent the ingress of dust and water. The IP66 rating means that these detectors are rated as "dust tight" and protected against heavy seas or powerful jets of water. However, it is essential that aspirating pipe is installed correctly to avoid low spots where dirt, water and condensation can collect. In applications where water is likely to exist, a water trap can be installed in front of the detector to withdraw any moisture.

Extreme Temperature Environments

In environments that are extremely cold or extremely hot, standard detectors can be damaged and rendered ineffective. In these situations, VESDA aspirating smoke detectors can be installed outside of the extreme temperature environment and the sampled air from the hot or cold area can be cooled or heated to within the detectors temperature range before it enters the detection chamber.

Corrosive Environments

The addition of inline chemical filters, used to remove any corrosive chemical compounds from the air stream before it reaches the detection chamber, means that ASD can provide the perfect detection solution for corrosive environments. Within VESDA VLI detectors, conformal coated printed circuit boards provide an additional layer of protection.  

EMI or High Vibration Applications

For areas that experience high levels of electromagnetic interference or vibration, an aspirating smoke detector can be installed in a separate location and draw air from the protected areas through its network of pipes. This protects the detector from the conditions within the detection area.

Hazardous Location - Safety Integrity Level

Many VESDA detectors are approved for use in Class 1 Division 2 or Zone 2 hazardous locations. There are also a number of detectors with Safety Integrity Level (SIL) certification available.
