Aspirating smoke detection is based around a central detection unit which continually draws air through a network of small and unobtrusive pipes. As the air moves through the sampling chamber, the detection unit uses a nephelometer to detect the presence of smoke particles by measuring the amount of light that is scattered (or reflected) by smoke particles in the chamber.

Aspirating smoke detectors use discrete sampling pipes with multiple holes and in most cases asprating smoke detectors will require a fan unit to draw air through the pipes from the protected area. As this happens the air is filtered, removing any contaminants or dust to avoid false alarms, before it is processed by the highly sensitive detection unit.

Aspirating smoke detectors are highly sensitive and can detect smoke even before it is visible to the human eye, providing a very early warning of a fire event and prompting investigation at the earliest smouldering stage of fire when it can be easily dealt with.

This type of fire detection is suitable for environments where highly sensitive rapid smoke detection is required and pipe networks can be easily hidden. This makes aspirating smoke detection most suitable for environments where the aesthetics of a property are to be maintained but aspirating smoke detection can also be used in dusty or dirty environments as long as the correct design, installation and maintenance processes are followed.

The EF Aspirating Smoke Detection Range by Eurofyre

The EF ASD (aspirating smoke detection) system from Eurofyre provides a very early warning of fire, allowing alarms to be contained and investigated with minimal interruption to a business. The EF range of detectors offer excellent coverage and powerful performance to suit a variety of applications in the most demanding situations.

EF ASDs use an aspirating fan - capable of functioning in high air flow areas, air conditioned environments and clean rooms - to actively draw air through rigid, 25mm pipes, perforated along their length with sampling holes. Areas of up to 2,000 metres2 can be protected by these high sensitivity smoke detectors which feature 100 metres of pipe length per inlet depending on the detector.

To accurately locate the source of a fire, other Eurofyre EF detectors using exclusive micro bore technology can be used to monitor up to 15 individual addressable sampling points.

Traditional point detectors can be converted into comprehensive aspirating systems using the EF-ASD. Capable of housing nearly any manufacturer's conventional or analogue (spot) detector, the EF-ASD is ideal for use in dusty, harsh and hard-to-reach areas.

The EF-LASD has a higher sensitivity and delivers heightened area coverage in comparison to the standard smoke receptiveness of a traditional smoke detector. One or two of these laser detectors can be added to the controller should coverage of bigger area be required.
